Legionnaires disease is caused by inhaling droplets of water infected with the organism frequently found in water supplies. Water must be stored at above 60°C to prevent this organism from forming. However, water at this temperature presents a high risk of scalding.
The most vulnerable to this type of accident are the young, elderly and infirm. Hot bath water is the number one cause of severe scalding injuries among young children.
To combat this, a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) can be installed into your home. A TMV mixes the hot and cold water at the point of use, therefore providing your home with safe water at a comfortable temperature.
According to BuildCert (an independent third party certification of plumbing products and standards/criteria), a TMV is recommended within the Housing Associations guidance document. This document requires that all social housing be fitted with TMV's to reduce incidents of scalding. It has been proposed that all newly built or converted domestic properties should be fitted with a TMV in the future by law. However, we would recommend to all our customers to install a TMV now to prevent accidents within the home. |
